Choosing a Gasfitter

20 Jun Choosing a Gasfitter

Need a gasfitter for work at home, or on a commercial project? Wondering if you can save a buck and do a sneaky DIY gasfitting job with the help of YouTube? We’ve got the skinny on what gasfitting is, who’s allowed to do it, and how you can choose the best gasfitter for your project.

What is Gasfitting?

Gasfitting involves the installation, maintenance and repair of gas appliances, pipes and ventilation.

As summed up by the New Zealand Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board:

Gasfitting is any work involved in installing, altering or repairing gas appliances including the fixing or unfixing of any gas pipes, ventilation or flue pipes, commissioning gas appliances and ensuring their safe operation (including the testing, setting, checking and adjusting of safety devices, combustion conditions and controls associated with the gas installation and ensuring there is adequate ventilation).

Essentially, a gasfitter will ensure that all gas appliances and connections are functional, effective, and safe to use.

Can I DIY Gasfitting Work?

No way, Jose! When it comes to gasfitting, only those who hold a New Zealand Practising Licence can carry out restricted gasfitting work. The only gas-related tasks you’re safely – and legally – able to DIY are changing the gas bottles on portable gas appliances such as barbecues and patio heaters.

Remember – not only is it illegal to do this type of restricted work without a licence (you could get slapped with a $50,000 fine for attempting it yourself), it’s also unsafe! Calling in an expert gasfitter is the only way to go. You can’t put a price on the safety of you and your loved ones.

How do I Choose a Gasfitter?

Looking for a gasfitter? These are some of the key things to consider when researching local gasfitters online, making an enquiry, and selecting the right gasfitter to meet your needs:

  1. Check customer reviews
Reviews on Facebook and Google can go a long way in indicating whether past clients are happy with the work a gasfitter has carried out, so look them up!
  2. Give them a call
Contact any gasfitters you’re considering getting a quote from to discuss the job. Check that they are authorised for gasfitting works. Look for a company with great communication, knowledgeable staff, and fair pricing.
  3. Check their certifications
When your gasfitter arrives, and before they get started, ask to see their authorisation card and check the expiry date to see that it is current. You can search the licence number of your chosen gasfitter on the public register for added peace of mind.
